The best watercolour retreat is not automatically the one with the longest excursion list or the most luxurious photographs. It is the one whose teaching, pace, accommodation and destination work together for the kind of experience you want.
Start with the tutor, not the destination
Morocco supplies remarkable colour and subject matter, but a retreat still depends on how it is taught. Look for a practising artist whose work you respect and an explanation of how they support mixed levels. A strong programme includes demonstration, individual feedback and time to apply an idea rather than moving quickly from one set piece to another.
Ask whether you will learn transferable skills—such as value structure, colour mixing, edges and atmospheric perspective—or mainly follow finished paintings step by step. Both approaches can be enjoyable, but they serve different aims.
Check how much painting time is protected
A crowded itinerary can leave little energy for painting. Read the daily plan and distinguish structured tuition from sightseeing, free time and transfers. Cultural visits are most valuable when they support observation and give context to the work rather than competing with it.
Consider group size and individual attention
“Small group” should be supported by a credible number. A manageable group allows the tutor to notice when someone is struggling with a wash, composition or confidence. It also helps solo guests get to know people without making the retreat feel institutional.
Read the inclusions precisely
Compare like with like. Check the number of nights, room type, meals, tuition days, materials, transfers and cultural activities. Note what is excluded, particularly flights, insurance and personal spending. A lower headline price may require significant additions; a higher price may include things you do not value.
Look for a realistic approach to place
Morocco should not be presented as visual decoration. Responsible creative travel pays attention to local rules, asks before making recognisable portraits, respects religious and private spaces and does not block working streets for a drawing session. Good hosting helps guests observe confidently without treating daily life as a stage set.
Accommodation affects the creative rhythm
A riad can give a group a calm base, repeat subjects across changing light and reduce daily movement. Look beyond styled photographs: check room arrangements, shared spaces, stairs or access requirements, and how far the accommodation supports the planned programme.

- How many tuition days and independent practice periods are included?
- Does group size allow individual feedback?
- Are materials included, specified or left vague?
