A Moroccan hammam is a traditional bathhouse centred on warmth, water and a thorough cleansing ritual. It is not simply a modern spa treatment. For generations, the hammam has been part of everyday Moroccan life—a place to wash, slow down and spend time with family or friends.
Some hammams are public neighbourhood bathhouses, while others are smaller private spaces inside riads. Their surroundings may differ, but the tradition remains simple: heat softens the skin, water cleanses the body, and exfoliation leaves the skin feeling refreshed.
A tradition of cleansing and connection
Historically, many homes did not have the bathing facilities they have today, so a regular visit to the local hammam was both practical and social. Women, men and children would visit at separate times or use separate areas. It became a familiar weekly ritual—unhurried, communal and woven into local life.
That social character still matters. A hammam is traditionally less about luxury and more about care, cleanliness and taking time away from the pace of the day.
What happens during a hammam?
The details vary from place to place, but a traditional hammam usually follows a few simple stages:
- Warming: You spend time in a warm, steamy room so the skin begins to soften.
- Black soap: A soft, olive-based soap—often called savon beldi—is applied to damp skin.
- Exfoliation: The skin is scrubbed with a textured kessa glove. This can feel surprisingly vigorous, but it is a normal part of the ritual.
- Rinsing: Warm water is used to rinse the body thoroughly.
- Optional treatments: Depending on the hammam, clay, oils or a massage may be offered afterwards. These additions are not part of every traditional hammam.
The experience is straightforward and may feel different from a British spa. The attendant will guide you through it, so there is no need to know the routine beforehand. Clothing and privacy arrangements vary, so simply follow the guidance given by the hammam.
